Back to the Future of Camera Oscura

During the 2017 edition of Photo London, the artist duo Walter and Zoniel  in collaboration with Matches Fashion installed at Phillips auction house a giant room-sized camera, creating direct-positive works onsite.

Last year, they had installed such a giant camera oscura at Somerset House creating life size prints tintypes. The printing on metal sheets was using the 1850’s photographic technique while this year, the dark room was set up directly in the room for paper printing that could be hand coloured by the artists.

Interesting to see either references to the birth of photography in installation such as the wonderful Mat Collishaw’s VR hommage to Henry Fox Talbot or the contemporary use of ‘ancient” photographic techniques.

Walter and Zoniel are represented by Gazelli Art House.
