The New York Art Book Fair is taking place at MoMA PS1 where an impressive number of exhibitors are gathered with an even more impressive number of events during the duration of it. It therefore seemed completely inadequate to single out one publication but I am sticking to my new rule.
THE THING Quarterly is a periodical in the form of an object. Each year, four artists, writers, musicians or filmmakers are invited by the editors (Jonn Herschend and Will Rogan) to create a useful object that somehow incorporates text. This object is reproduced, hand-wrapped at a wrapping party, and mailed to the homes of subscribers with the help of the United States Postal Service.
I was drawn to Issue 19. Having arrived in New York a couple months ago from London a David Shrigley’s travel wallet seemed to make all the sense in the world. British humor meets expatriation! What a jolly idea indeed!
I am eager to discover this year Gabriel Orozco’s issue. Stay tuned!
