Congratulations to the 2014 classes! Last night was the preview of the 2014 degree show. It opened to the public today and will run until May 27th.
I first went to see Andy Flett who is one of the artists of Galerie E.G.P to congratulate him and see his latest artwork. He will be exhibiting in Paris again for Be My Guest a show opening on June 12th, 2014. The idea? The artists of the gallery have become curators and invited an artist that they relate to. For Andy Flett, this artist is June Jung who also graduated last night.
It was buzzing and overwhelming. There was a plethora of references to art history and I felt like coming across shades of Chuck Close, Carl Andre or Philippe Pareno to name but a few. Is that a bad thing? Many times I felt like saying “Stop trying so hard!” and yet it is a degree show so I guess one has to try hard before unclipping his/her wings. Here are some images of some of the works that were on view. I would like to make a a special mention for Untitled ( mixed media) by Lou MacNamara. It reminded me of the exhibition On the Subject of War that took place at the Barbican in 2008 where contemporary artists where giving their impression on the said subject. MacNamara’s installation interestingly renders the idea that the image of war conveyed by the media is stylised, leaving out much of the reality that in turn remains on the edge.
